The Caribbean – where to go?

If you’re looking for a great holiday destination, with lots of sunshine, great food and a friendly atmosphere, the Caribbean is a great place to visit. Tropical climates, food that’s freshly prepared and welcoming receptions to visitors are common traits of the Caribbean isles. Still, it can be difficult deciding exactly which island will suit your needs best. Here’s a brief overview of the different Caribbean islands.

- Jamaica. One of the larger islands, Jamaica is said to have rather a different atmosphere to other island in the Caribbean.  With Kingston acting as a hub for the slave trade, the culture of the country is more closely aligned to its African roots. The beaches and clear waters are still there, but Jamaica has an additional cultural and historical dimension that many travellers enjoy experiencing.

- Grenada. Seen as one of the friendliest and laid back of all the islands, Grenada has moved on from its turbulent history. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan destroyed many of the plantations and buildings here but the island is springing back – there’s great scuba diving off the coast and if you venture westwards, the picturesque town of St George, with its Caribbean Georgian architecture, is well worth a visit.

- St Barthelemy. Known as the St Tropez of the Caribbean, St Barths has long been seen as a playground for the rich and famous. With extraordinary beaches nestled in amongst the bays, a glamorous vibe, and lots of chic restaurants, don’t be surprised to see a celebrity or two here.

- Barbados. One of the most popular islands in the Caribbean, with half a million visitors each year. Barbados has something for everyone. Yes, there are the requisite sandy beaches and five star resorts, and of course, rum, but there are also the lush limestone hills of central Barbados, with traces of the island’s colonial past still intact. There are plenty of activities on offer – surfing, hiking and diving to name a few.

Once you’ve decided which destination you’d like to visit, it’s time to organise your holiday. There are a range of tour operators and providers out there so you don’t have to go the independent route.
